statement
The accumulation of influences, beliefs, secrets, memories, heritage, and experiences are the foundation of Prieto’s work, she believes life is a collection of past events that shape the present, and consequently the future. Prieto explores the topic of the self through different medium like felt, wool, hair, dirt, paper, and stitching with performance, installation, video, and photography; trying to know and understand things she cannot.
“Each work is a page in a book, a piece of a puzzle, each tells a story, a feeling, an opinion, or a struggle in itself; combined these works are my diary, designed as a mirror image for me to look at and understand my decisions”. Felisa Prieto – 2010
Her installations are meant to question not to answer, and to make the viewer feel as confused and vulnerable as she feels with work that appears gentle and animated. In her work Prieto uses light, reflection and shadow to represent people’s lack of interest; that is to understand personal stories and experiences.

I am the daughter of the daughter of her mother that is the mother of my mother who lived with her mother whose daughter left her mother whose daughter fought her mother for not being my mothers mother whose daughter is my mother who fought her daughter until her daughter left her mother who claimed to be different of her mother who is my mothers mother whose daughter is my mother whose daughter I am when my mothers daughter left her mother she claimed to never repeat her mother again my mothers daughter who claimed never to be like her mother ended like her mother who swore never to be like her mother who is my mothers mother who is the daughter of her mother who is the mother of my mother. I am my mother.

Si vengo de la tierra,
entonces mi pelo no es pelo sino tierra,
pero la tierra no es mas tierra cuando yo soy yo;
cuando yo soy so, soy pelo
así que si yo soy yo, entonces mis memorias son de pelo.
Pero cuando ya no tengo pelo,
el pelo deja de ser pelo,
deja de ser parte de mi como pelo.
Este mismo al no ser pelo, es tierra,
la misma tierra que era antes de ser pelo,
y a la cual volverá cuando yo vuele y deje de ser pelo.
If I come from the earth,
then my hair is not hair but earth,
but the earth is no longer earth when I am I;
but when I am I, I am hair,
so if I am I, then my memories are of hair.
But when I no longer have hair,
the hair stops being of hair,
stops being a part of me as hair.
This hair not being hair, is earth,
the same earth that was before being hair
and to which it shall return
when I fly and stop being of hair.
